Firefox 3 Turns up the Heat

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Well they've done it, and it was predicted long ago. Yesterday's launch of Firefox 3 has smashed the Firefox 2 download record by achieving over 8.3 million downloads in 24 hours. That works out at roughly 5,764 downloads per minute worldwide. This record means that Firefox 3 already has 4% of the market share for web browsers despite only being 48 hours old. I have no doubts that Guiness will recognise this acheivement in the next world records book. From what I've seen of Firefox 3 so far it doesn't appear to have any drastic improvements over Firefox 2. Regardless, this ... Read Article »

Profy - The casual all-in-one

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I came across Profy today and it really impressed me. It claims to be an 'all-in-one' blogging platform, a haven for bloggers if you like, where a combination of blog posting, social networking and feed reading is combined into one easy-to-use platform. Having watched the demo, it certainly does look easy to use and this leads on from my previous post about who uses social bookmarking. My concerns of casual Internet users being able to use such features were founded on lack of purpose to uses them and lack of mass documentation describing what they are and how to use ... Who Uses Social bookmarking?

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

You look at any blog post including this one, and you'll see various tags attached around the pages tell you to 'bookmark this', 'sphinn that' or 'make this post a favourite' and I'm sitting here thinking who actually uses all these widgets and why? Digg claims to have over 20 million users, which is quite incredible but who are these users? The idea is that when you bookmark a site or a post, it becomes saved in your profile on the social bookmarking site and most likely shared to other users using the same service. So by making this bookmark, you ... Read Article »

Google XML Sitemap for Wordpress

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

If you're interested in optimizing your blog, you can make it much easier for search engines to crawl by adding a sitemap written on an XML page. The standard way of doing this involves creating a static XML page by taking a snapshot of your site at one time. However, the Google XML Sitemaps Generator for Wordpress will create an excellent quality sitemap for you which dynamically and automatically updates whenever new pages or posts are added to your blog. Take a look at mine: http://www.adammoss.co.uk/sitemap.xml It is downloadable as a simple plugin which just requires activation and submission from ... Read Article »

Music 2.0

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

When MP3 came out, it revolutionized the way we listen to music. No longer did it need to be played from a physical medium like a tape or a disk, now music could be played from a storage device and the software available allowed you to start the song from any point by just dragging a pointer along a horizonal bar. Songs could be stored in their thousands and they could be arranged in any order. According to none other than the Korea Times, 'Music 2.0' or the new MT9 format, is a new music format that could be seeing a ... Read Article »

ScribbleLive & Exclusive

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

One of the drawbacks of the current blogging platform is the fact that the content displayed on the page is static - it won't update until you tell it to, by revisiting the page or refreshing the browser. Static content is also a feature of discussion boards and forums which is why it can be difficult to have flowing conversations, especially when posts are made simultaneously. ScribbleLive rewrites the ules of this publishing platform by offering its users the ability to view and manipulate live data over a network. ScribbleLive was given special recognition at Canada's Mesh Conference of the latest ... Read Article »

Feedreader and the future of RSS

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I came across Feedreader the other day and was very impressed by the service it offered. It is basically what I expect the immediate future of RSS to offer in terms of Web 2.0/3.0 technologies. Instead of having the feed stored on a website, social bookmarking site or in your web browser, the content gets automatically delivered in an exceptionally user-friendly desktop new aggregator. I was staggered with how easy it was to use and how useful it is to have the web delivered to you in the most direct of circumstances. Furthermore, the application is free and features two more ... Google Maps - Liberty City

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

With the recent release of Grand Theft Auto IV, what is looking being the best selling game of all time, it is only to be expected that Internet followers will be utilizing Web 2.0 technologies to bring about a worldwide community of fans of the game. One of the most interesting I've found is the Map of Liberty City, which was assembled by the site's registered users, that uses the technologies provided by Google's Google Maps service. Google Maps - Liberty City Map The map is very detailed with markers locating pretty much every point of interest including missions, restaurants and places ... Read Article »

A ‘nofollow-Free’ Blog

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I happy to announce that this blog is now free of any nofollow comands that used to prevent Google and other search engines from influencing the link target's ranking in the search engine's index. This meant every comment prior to this was effected and potentially worthless as a link. This won't encourage spam though as I'll still remove anything which I don't like. You can find out more about the DoFollow plugin for your blog or download it directly here: sem-dofollow (zip) Read Article »
